GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA'S AQUA ANGELS ARTISTIC SWIM TEAM
BEGINS ITS 2025 SEASON
TROPICAL STORM SEASON
TROPICAL STORM SEASON!
Gainesville Florida’s Aqua Angels Artistic Swimming Team attended Florida’s 43rd annual Sunshine State Games, the longest continually running State Games in the United States. In addition, four multi-sport festivals were held in Alachua, Broward, Clay, and Polk counties providing more than 20 different amateur sports opportunities to Florida athletes of all ages. The Gandy Pool in downtown Lakeland welcomed this year’s Artistic Swimming Championships as part of these statewide Games, held June 3-5th.
Last-minute, parents had to decide whether to travel with Alex; the first tropical storm of the season causing concerns with its projected trajectory, with flood warnings in the traveling path to and from Lakeland expecting to hit during the days of the competition. The possibility of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges kept several Aqua Angel families at bay for safety reasons.
Families that chose to take the risk to travel and participate had a blast performing and cheering on the competition. Aqua Angels’ routines entertained with various themes. Just like the tropical storm, Alex, one Aqua Angel hit the water with a blizzard of enthusiasm and thunderous applause from her teammates, leaving behind quite the wake with her incredible high pop-ups and accuracy in figures. Themes included the power of Loki, the cunningness and avenging gazes of Medusa, Viking victories, and a circus ballerina performing on the tightrope with acrobatic finesse. We enjoyed watching the strings of the puppeteer’s duet being pulled this way and that, and like the beauty of the butterfly spreading her wings, another athlete gracefully demonstrated the Monarch’s journey and life span that takes courage and tenacity, which all Aqua Angel Athletes possess!
Regionals was funtastic! We thank all the athletes, volunteers, coaches, judges, family, and friends for the hard work and dedication it took to coordinate this event. We send our happy vibes to all participants and wish great success to all artistic swim athletes!
Stay safe, healthy, blessed, and most of all, be happy with what you do in life with loads of kindness and sprinkles of gratitude!

COMPETE IN MAY'S EAST/WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT SAILFISH SPLASH PARK IN STUART, FL
MEDUSA'S AVENGING AND BEAUTIFUL GAZE!
MEDUSA'S AVENGING AND BEAUTIFUL GAZE!
Gainesville Florida’s Aqua Angels Artistic Swimming Team attended the East/ West Regional Championships in May held at the Sailfish Splash Park, Stuart, Florida, hosted by the Palm Beach Garden Synchro Team.
On the first day of Regionals, the sun’s burning rays could be felt as the spirit of competition was on fire. Junior Olympic athletes have been applying themselves to their chosen sport with determination and intense focus. The powerful and engaging competition filled the atmosphere on the second day. The heavy storm passing through at midday set off tornado watch sirens. But, just as the sizzling sun could be felt again, so too was the hot competitive spirit. It was exhilarating and adrenaline-pumping, and the routines were sharp and clean. The athletes were impressive as they expressed themselves acrobatically with precise manipulation of the water. Their bodies flowed gracefully with power, communicating the theme of their choreography set to the sounds of music while completing the sport’s intricate, detailed technical requirements. Watching the immense talent pour forth from brilliant young hearts is incredibly satisfying.
The benefits of friendly competition spur athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving high standards and goals they have set for themselves, and it’s an extraordinary way to express and expand their talents and character. Moreover, the insight and experiences they gain are long-lasting and life-changing.
Friendly competition helps athletes learn how to manage stress and pressure at any moment with bravery and finesse. Managing emotions in real-time, like embarrassment, anxiety, frustration, facing fears, and taking risks when the pressure is on, creates valuable teaching moments of finding the strength they were not aware they possessed until faced with these encounters. They learn to encourage themselves and their teammates to push through and overcome and focus on improving their skills to enjoy performing them to the best of their abilities. Athletes learn to believe in themselves and one another, which fosters the growth of loyalty and unity. With that, they have met the brave champion that resided in them all along. As these champions mature, they apply those experiences to their lives outside the sport. It’s thrilling to know that signing up for a simple synchro summer camp for fun is one of the building blocks that can lead to outstanding confident men and women contributing to their communities with life skills learned at a local friendly artistic swimming competition.
Many thanks for the hard work and dedication the Palm Beach Garden Synchro Team showed to the artistic swimming community by hosting the Regional Championships!
Blessings to all the teams! We wish you much success; stay healthy, happy, and safe!

COMPETE IN APRIL'S NW/NE ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ORLANDO
BEAUTIFUL AND ENCHANTING!
BEAUTIFUL AND ENCHANTING!
Gainesville Florida’s Aqua Angels Artistic Swim Team attended the April NW/NE Association Championships. The Orlando Lorelies and the Flagler Bells Artistic Swimming teams collaborated to host the event at the Mary Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center in Orlando. This is the same pool that our fine Aqua Angels Team attended during our first meet of the year amidst the cold spell in January.
Being a beautiful indoor facility, we got a break from the hot April sun, suntan lotion, lugging around our chairs, and the whole tent set-up process. The bleachers were quite plentiful for the crowds that showed up to support Junior Olympic athletes in their endeavors.
Teams performed their polished routines and showed accuracy in their figures, evidencing the dedication and effort they have been applying as we progress deeper into the competition season. Athletes complete elaborately controlled moves by propelling themselves to stay up or down with verticals, pop-ups, and spins, all with a theatrical flair, plenty of smiles, and powerful stares.
Competition is healthy as it inspires one to push themselves to accomplish their goals. Studies have shown that competitive sports give athletes positive influences in the form of teammates and coaches. Unfortunately, 70 % of teen athletes stop competing by the age of 13 because the FUN they initially signed up for to have a good time, meet friends, and learn something new, takes a back seat to winning. At the Aqua Angels, we bond like a family in FUN the entire year of training. Together, we create memories we will always treasure as we develop our synchro skills, grow in character, strategic and analytical thinking, mental toughness, and good sportsmanship. So proud of our team and their stoic perseverance while maintaining high levels of belly laughter! Who can forget the moments of a hawk and crow fighting over a piece of pizza high above us and dropping it on one of our Aqua Angels. Hilarious blessings from above!! Aqua Angels have learned to carry this fun and excitement into the competition. They learn to tap into the potential deep within and let the champion arise with courage as they confront fears and face the risk of rejection that comes with performing in front of an audience. As a team, we experience the adrenaline rush and thrills of competition with joy, creating a pleasurable, rewarding experience as we entertain each other and create memorable moments.
Another special shout out to the Orlando Lorielies and Flagler Bells and all the coaches, judges and officials, athletes, parents, and their loved ones who contributed collectively to make this meet a success!

COMPETE IN MARCH SPRING INVITATIONAL
PLENTY OF FUN IN THE SUN!
PLENTY OF FUN IN THE SUN!
Gainesville, Florida’s Aqua Angels Artistic Swimming Team, had fun in the sun, attending the March 2022 Spring Invitational competition held in Land O’ Lakes, Florida!
Thank you to the Florida Elite Synchro Warriors and the labor of love you put forth that goes with hosting such an incredible competition.
Athletes train vigorously for competitions, and the next thing you know, the excitement of competition day is here. The five senses are in full bloom as the aroma of chlorine and suntan lotion fills the air. There’s the hot sun, sun hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, and tents. The athletes getting Knox slathered on their glazed donut buns on their heads, and then there are the trails of bobby pins, glitter, and other synchro breadcrumbs scattered about. An assortment of music genres can be heard through the cheering crowd; from toe-tapping, soulful happy music, to inspirational, graceful, and melodic, to a villain twist mixed with a little creepy, or pop, classic rock, and more!
Artistic swimming competitions showcase wonderfully complex and different choreography styles, music choices, and various athlete personalities that shine with expression as they perform in pixie-dusted costumes. Because it is an exciting, enjoyable sport, the most experienced can be heard cheering on the next generation of novice performers as the sport captures their hearts and they join the community of artistic swim lovers. Whether they swim for a few seasons or stay with it for life, artistic swimming can positively impact one’s life with a fun and rewarding experience!
The meet was a success, and we thank you, Florida Elite Synchro Warriors, for the beautiful medals, ribbons and all the hard work you put forth to allow everyone to have fun in the sun at your competition!
We wish ALL the teams continued SUCCESS as you enjoy participating in our wonderful sport! Stay healthy, happy, and, more importantly, stay safe!

ENCOURAGES SAFETY AWARENESS
Safe training for the lung capacity of an artistic swimmer!
Safe training for the lung capacity of an artistic swimmer!
Breath control and expanded lung capacity are a couple of the secrets and wonders of artistic swimming.
How does an artistic swimmer build up their lung capacity to perform upside down for so long? Several ways to build up lung capacity include supervised underwater laps, lap sprints, multiple routine run-throughs back to back, etc. With these in mind, let’s review some of the Awareness and Safety Tips for Summer Pool Fun via videos.
This month we are encouraging awareness of shallow water blackouts. At the Aqua Angels, we believe it is vital to teach athletes while training to increase their lung capacity to NEVER ignore their urge to breathe while swimming underwater. Every swimmer is created unique; the composition of their bodies and chemical responses can be different from one day to the next, and when compared to their teammates, even more differences can be noted. The danger arises from athletes trying to beat teammates in breath-holding games by seeing how far they can go in underwater laps without taking a breath. The child may also simply be trying to impress their coach on how far they can go by ignoring the urge to breathe, which can lead to a shallow water blackout tragedy. This is why shallow water blackout can occur amongst competent, strong, elite swimmers.
Our head coach is vigilant regarding lung-increasing capacity drills because of her experience with shallow water blackout, which heightened her awareness. She delved into a study on the topic which revealed that some make light of the matter and feel the responsibility to monitor athletes rests solely with the lifeguards on duty, who are themselves possibly uneducated about the seriousness of shallow water blackout. She disagrees with that approach and has discussed it with some of the top synchro champions and coaches through the years, learning additional targeted strategies during her internship.
At the Aqua Angels, our head coach has years of hands-on experience discerning the unique differences between athletes and their ever-changing needs at the moment. Therefore, each athlete has personal goals to work through to achieve the lung capacity required of an artistic swimmer under the watchful eyes of the dedicated Aqua Angels coaching team. Because of its importance, coaches prioritize that proper rest is completed during training to balance out the CO2 and O2 levels in the athlete’s body and ensure they do not hyperventilate by taking extra deep breaths before continuing their lung exercises because safety comes first.
The Aqua Angels coaches believe learning in an atmosphere where athletes can enjoy their lives at the pool while increasing their skills is conducive to creating passion and inspiring the champion within. This allows the athletes to confidently relax and push themselves to achieve their personal goals, expand creatively, and explore their gifts and talents.
So, as we launch into summer FUN AT THE POOL, be aware that you can have FUN while performing strenuous drills, but it MUST be coupled with AWARENESS and a mindset that SAFETY always comes first!
Please watch the following short videos and immediately learn about shallow water blackouts. Then, SHARE with at least one of your friends and family members. Together, let’s do our part in keeping everyone safe!

COMPETE IN PALM BEACH
Inspiring the next generation of artistic swimmers!
Inspiring the next generation of artistic swimmers!
Gainesville, Florida’s Aqua Angels Artistic Swimming Team, participated in February’s Winter Invite, which took place in good ole southern Florida, home of the Palm Beach Coralytes. Aqua Angels’ dedicated team families and coaches traveled down to attend the enormous competition. We saw a beautiful sunny day our first day, with the second day having our athletes brave through the little additional water falling from above, doing what they love, synchro figures! Eventually, the sun returned and shone brightly, just as all the artistic swimmers lined up in their vast array of fabulous sparkling costumes with personalities to match!
It was exciting to witness all the team families supporting each other and watching all the athletes enjoying themselves performing and expressing themselves artistically to their interpretation of artistic swimming, with such a plethora of phenomenal talent!
Globally, competitive sports has been taking a hard hit, leaving many sports organizations figuring out how to move forward. Our sport, too, could fizzle out if it weren’t for the dedication of the families coming together and working hard at local clubs and competitions. As more and more teams pop up to share their passion and talent for our sport, it is helping to bring awareness to the general public of just what artistic swimming is as they expand in different avenues and reach different types of audiences. We can use our sport to create quality, enjoyable, and engaging experiences for families however they choose to participate, whether for exercise, recreation, or competition. We can encourage them to come out together, relax and support each other in these types of events as just one of the many ways to help build and ensure a sustainable, prosperous future for our sport. The pandemic caused some rearranging, but thankfully, our sport is thriving as we join together to inspire the hearts and minds of the next generation of artistic swim lovers!
Thank you to the host team, Palm Beach Coralytes, for the energetic and exciting competition! It motivates and inspires us to push ourselves to the next level. We appreciate you and the incredible amount of hard work put forth by all the dedicated coaches, officials, parents, and athletes who helped make the meet a success!
The Aqua Angels Artistic Swim Team had a great time, and we wish ALL the teams much SUCCESS this year! Have FUN swimming but more importantly, stay healthy and happy!

Enjoying the thrill of competing!
Gainesville, Florida’s Aqua Angels Artistic Swimming Team, chilled out in Orlando during a cold spell in our nation, which included the coldest temps in Florida at our first competition of the year in January. The Orlando Loreleis held the Mary Rose Invitational at the Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center’s indoor pool, which was fitting for such a time as this when warmth was coveted!
Thank you for hosting, and everyone’s hard work in bringing synchro lovers together for a day of fun competition! Thank you for your beautiful ribbons and medals, which included a rose in honor of your Loreleis founder Mary Rose! Amazingly beautiful and thoughtful!

Coaches Zaira, Leilani, Crystalia and Aqua Angels
Coach Leilani Torres and her two lovely daughters stopped by on this chilly day, all the way from their home in Chile! They were visiting our area, and since synchro is in her blood, she couldn’t resist an invitation to visit and spread her positive energy!
Our girls have grown quite a bit since the last time she was here coaching them. They were excited to see her, share memories, and appreciate the mentoring and encouragement she gives, who shares synchro wisdom and mentors via social media, her youtube channel, coachtube channel, and more.
Love and hugs from the Aqua Angels to Leilani and her little angels! See ya real soon!
Thank you again, Orlando Loreleis! We appreciate your hard work, we had a blast, and we wish for ALL the teams to stay healthy and strong and have great SUCCESS this year!

Attend USAAS Convention in Reno, NV
Coach Crystalia, Ludi Perrin -Stsepaniuk, Coach Zaira, Andrea Fuentes
Coach Crystalia, Ludi Perrin-Stsepaniuk, Coach Zaira, Andrea Fuentes
Coaches Crystalia and Zaira have had a blast attending the back-to-back, all-day classes at USAAS Convention held Oct 7-10th at the beautiful Atlantis Casino and Resort Spa in Reno, NV.
They enjoyed the vast range of classes provided and taught by teachers and coaches like Dr. Chelsea Pierotti, Adam Andrasko, Barb Nesbitt, Andrea Fuentes, Ludi Perrin-Stsepaniuk and Anna Voloshyna, just to name a few.
Our coaches took special note of the wisdom shared in applying sports psychology to coaching to protect the mental health of our athletes. How to prepare our athletes for competition, coaching philosophy, the importance of a positive culture and atmosphere of our teaching environment, effective coaching and leadership styles, and how to promote trust with our athletes.
Coach Crystalia and Coach Zaira enjoyed Andrea’s approach to choreography, her expert tips, techniques, her teaching on improv, and the importance of getting athletes involved in choreography to help them learn at an early age how to apply their creative skills to the sport and express themselves artistically.
Our coaches thoroughly enjoyed the teachings by Barb Nesbitt on common injury prevention, overuse injuries due to improper technique and form, and explaining and clarifying the dangers of sitting in splits for long periods of time, as it overstretches the ligaments causing permanent injuries. She recommends no longer than 2.5 minutes at a time because once you overstretch the ligaments, there is no going back. In addition, attendees learned proper rest and recovery, full range of motion and flexibility techniques, and the different methods of stretching correctly.
Lastly, some classes reviewed the Athletes Bill of Rights, the new scoring system and rules of our evolving sport, and marketing methods and pitfalls to avoid for team prosperity.
It was an all-encompassing, well-rounded, fully stacked weekend of education. Aqua Angels Artistic Swimming Team wishes to thank EVERYONE at USAAS who contributed to making the convention a success! We hope to see everyone at the next convention!
